I almost feel like my alertness meter goes up higher automatically when I travel alone. And usually I'll email my ideas of where I'll be to a few friends so they know what I'm thinking of doing. The best way to prevent becoming a victim is to exercise caution and common sense. If something feels wrong, immediately alert the authorities. Also, let your friends and loved ones at least know where you are and where you’re staying. If you’re going off the grid, let them know how long so they will have an idea if you’re in trouble.

Chin Angevine
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00161452163988699269noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879349202216668176.post-49527834700489292372014-02-24T06:44:53.971-08:002014-02-24T06:44:53.971-08:00It's fun to look back on old posts sometimes! ...It's fun to look back on old posts sometimes! When you get there and see it for yourself, it's almost like you are at a loss of words and you just stare at it. And you think the whole entire time, how did they create this magnificent empire? GO! GO! GO!

Although it looks like there wasn't anyone there, there were 5,000 people in the park! That's their limit. At that time, in the morning, most hurry to find a spot to watch the sunrise and some got the tickets that allowed them to climbed the mountain you see behind Machu Picchu. I just got lucky to get a lot of shots without people in them! But I did get quite a few with them. It's all about the timing. :) Definitely look it up! February is completely closed down but you can go any other month! I went at the end of June/beginning of July, when they were celebrating the 100 year anniversary of its discovery. I thought it was a perfect time to go! My girls loved learning about this place and loved that it was in the mountains and nature. We decided to do a field trip there - haha just kidding - if only that were possible!!!! We can dream big though right? Anyways I know my girls would love to see these pictures, so if you don't mind I think I will share this with them next week. I just know they'll love it. One day....I can definitely understand that it is hard to focus on both Mandarin and regular school work. I noticed that while learning Mandarin. My class just ended on Thursday. :( It's up to me to keep it up now! I compare a lot of the simplified characters with the traditional ones and a lot of them don't really resemble each other similarily which I can see that it'll make things harder to learn! I wonder what characters are used in China. Do you think they'll keep everything traditional or make new signs with simplified characters? Ahhhh I will try to head to CR!! If not, I have to go out east so if not Costa Rica, for sure Taiwan!! :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08997675090957349035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879349202216668176.post-12921583781410771742013-12-14T13:53:55.180-08:002013-12-14T13:53:55.180-08:00I always have to eat after I post about food. :) I...I always have to eat after I post about food. :) I miss the seafood there!!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08997675090957349035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879349202216668176.post-1998440035129399122013-12-14T13:53:12.367-08:002013-12-14T13:53:12.367-08:00Go to Argentina!!! I was lazy when it came to memorizing characters because between regular English school homework AND chinese school homework, English took over since obviously I went there more hours. But all the characters are simplified now which ironically, I can't read! I learned traditional. Unfortunately there are no Mandarin speaking people in the town I live in so I only speak it when I call home :( We're planning on staying here for another year or so and then go live in Taiwan! What state are you from? I love the deal! I speak in Spanish and you in Mandarin! The characters are a little hard to memorize and I'm slowly getting it. The pin ying is easier to remember and I can speak pretty well! Don't forget your reading and writing skills!!! I'm noticing now I need to keep my Spanish up because the Mandarin is slowly taking over! Trying to keep it balanced. I wish more schools were like the h.s. I work at. These students are so open-minded about life, culture, and travel. It's definitely not easy to learn at this age but as long as I don't get too distracted, I've been fine! 2x a week isn't enough though. Wish it was 3 or 4x a week. I admire you trying to learn it at this age though, I still have trouble reading/writing since I haven't done it since high school! Since you are much better at Spanish, you can speak to me in Spanish and I can reply back in Mandarin! lol. That is really cool to hear that people are learning it though - it's not easy!
I hear ya, it's one of the things I think we take for granted living in the States but one of the greatest benefits of traveling. I work at a high school as a Cross Country coach and it's required that the students learn Mandarin so it's amazing to hear my runners speaking the language. Actually it was pretty cool to find out my Chinese professor is their Chinese teacher so they always give me tips on how she teaches and such! It's just interesting that my perspective of The Amazing Race completely changed after my travels! It makes you appreciate more when you can go deep into a culture. The surface and the snap of the camera doesn't help me remember anything I've seen. It's always been programmed in me to be open-minded and to always try so I could never just take pictures of anything without figuring out what it is!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08997675090957349035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5879349202216668176.post-84810256882533001202013-10-27T13:04:17.759-07:002013-10-27T13:04:17.759-07:00lovely article and great insight - i feel the same...lovely article and great insight - i feel the same way although my Spanish has been slacking lately, it's how you can tell a tourist and traveler - travelers want to learn all they can and embed themselves into a new culture. tourists don't care and just want to snap a photo.
